Training
The Malawi Prison Service is headed by Chief Commissioner of Prisons (S2A), who is under the Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security. It has its head Office in Zomba, organized into five divisions namely Operations, Farms, Prison Clinic, Prison Training School and General Administration.
It has four regional offices, headed by Regional Prison Officer (Senior Assistant Commissioner of Prisons – SACP), situated in the Southern, Eastern, Central and Northern parts of the country. The regional offices cater for financial administration and general prison operations in the respective regions.
And then, there are twenty-seven district prison station, which are either first class or second class prisons. Zomba Central Prison built as late as 1935, is the Maximum Security Prison in the country, which hold prisoners with long sentences or serious offences.
Administration and General Division
The section, headed by Deputy Secretary (S4), provide support services to the line staff for them to perform their core functions efficiently and effectively. This is achieved through the Provision of human resource management,
Financial Management, General Office services and development services,

Operations:
This section, headed by Commissioner of Prisons – Operations (S2), exists to ensure Safe Custody and Rehabilitation or law offenders. It pursues its purpose through the following functions:
- Formulation of policies and guidelines for the smooth operation of the prison services

Ensuring that all facilities required for effective safeguarding and rehabilitation of prisoners are available.
- To ensure that information pertaining to prison activities is readily available to interested parties and the general public.

Farming
The principal objective of the Farms Division, headed by Commissioner of Prisons - Farms (S2), is to develop sustainable agricultural system that would ensure sufficient food and improved diet for prisoners, and also enhance their rehabilitation through imparting modern farming skill.
The above is achieved through the following functions: - Formulate and implement effective crop and animal husbandry policies and strategies.
- Promote farming practices that would ensure production of variety of both food and cash crops.
- To ensure availability of farming implements and equipment

Prison Clinic
The Prison Clinic, headed by Medical Officer (P5), is there to ensure that all prisoners have access to good medical care. The clinic is at Zomba Central Prison. However, there are medical personnel in many prison stations. But where there are
no medical personnel, sick prisoners are referred to District Hospitals.
The clinic exists, apart from treating prisoners, to:
- Ensure availability of drugs in the prison dispensaries

Ensure the availability of necessary medical equipment and facilities in the prison dispensaries
- Ensure availability of first-aid boxes in the prison stations.

Enforce environmental health standards in prison surroundings

Prison Training School
The Prison Training School was established in 1997 with the purpose to providing training to new recruits, and refresher/upgrading courses to serving officers. Training for the prison staff was formerly carried out at the Police Training School in Blantyre when the Police and Prison was under one department.
Since the two were delinked in 1992, Prison recruits have been undergoing on-the-job training only. The Prison Training School located at Mapanga in Blantyre opened its doors for first intake in 2000
