Our Vision

A Correctional Service, efficient and Effective, contributing to the Socio-economic Development of Malawi.

Our Mission:

We exist to Provide for Safe, Humane Custody and Rehabilitation of Offenders in order to Contribute to Public Safety and Socio-economic Development in Malawi.

Our Mandate

The Department's mandates, role and responsibilities are derived from the Constitution of the Republic of Malawi and Laws of Malawi. Our Mandate, in this regard, include the following:

  • House detain and rehabilitate persons committed to Prisons. (Constitution of Malawi 17:163).

  • Control of Prisons and Management of such institutions and incidental matters (Laws of Malawi 9:09 and Standing Orders).

Objectives

The Departments Plans and Objective are:

  1. To promote and sustain sound leadership and Management practices to all levels of the Department.

  2. To provide and improve safe custody of in mates.

  3. To provide humane and improved living conditions of offenders.

  4. To mobilize financial resources and ensure sound financial management practices

  5. To develop and maintain efficient Information Communication Technology Management information System.

The priority services for prison will be as follows:

Safe Custody of Prisoners
  • Prison Structure Rehabilitation
  • More Prison Staff trained prison staff deployed

  • Install Security System.

Human Treatment and Improved Living Conditions of Offenders

  • Health Conditions improved.

  • Inmates well fed.

  • Prisoners provided with uniform.

  • Reducing Congestion in Prisons.

Promote and Sustain sound Leadership and Management;Practices

  • Operational and work plans developed and adopted.

  • Exchange or Study Tour Programs implemented.

  • Staff well trained.

Mobilize financial resources and ensure sound financial management

  • Sources of alternative funding and income generation identified.

  • Sound financial and accounting practices put in place.

  • Adequate funds made available.
