THE MALAWI PRISON SERVICE HAS A NEW CHIEF COMMISSIONER

Mr M.L. Chaona - The New Chief Commissioner of Prisons

 

His Excellency the State President Dr Bingu wa Mutharika has appointed Mr Macdonald L. Chaona to the Office of the Chief Commissioner of Prisons.

Mr Chaona succeeds Mr Winston D. Manyera who was the chief commissioner of prisons from 2000 and retired on medical grounds on 30 June 2004.

Welcoming the news, members of staff were overjoyed with relief after staying patiently for a year without a head of department.

Mr Chaona is the sixth indigenous Commissioner to have headed the Prisons Department after Mr Davison, last white person to command the department. The other commissioners, in their order of appointment, are: Mr Chausa, Mr Chikanamoyo, Mr Mwale, Mr Mahamudu and Mr Manyera.

The appointment is effective from 17th June 2005.
